ABOUT THE FLINT HILLS: The Flint Hills represent the last expanse of intact tallgrass prairie in the nation. They present the best opportunity for sustained preservation of this unique habitat that once covered the vast Great Plains. Of the 170 million acres of tallgrass prairie that once ran from Canada down through the central part of the United States, less than 5% remains and almost all of that is in the Flint Hills. Cattle grazing in the Flint Hills between April and August can gain between 2 1/2 and 4 pounds per day.
